Tragic Targeted Attack: UnitedHealthcare CEO Fatally Shot in Midtown Manhattan
New York (CNN) – UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was tragically shot and killed in a shocking, targeted attack on Wednesday morning in Midtown Manhattan, police reported. The incident occurred as Thompson was heading to the Hilton Midtown for the company’s annual investor conference.
The assailant, described as masked and lying in wait, remains at large. Authorities believe the attack was premeditated, with New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirming that the shooter appeared to single out Thompson deliberately.
Details of the Attack
The shooting happened just before 7 a.m., with the gunman reportedly firing at least two shots—one striking Thompson in the back and another in the right calf. Emergency responders rushed Thompson to Mount Sinai West hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
At the crime scene, shell casings were recovered, bearing cryptic inscriptions: “deny,” “defend,” and “depose.” Investigators have yet to determine their significance.
Uncertain Motive Amid Previous Threats
While the motive remains unclear, sources indicate that UnitedHealthcare’s parent company, UnitedHealth Group, had been aware of unspecified threats aimed at its executives. Thompson himself had reportedly acknowledged receiving threats, his widow, Paulette Thompson, revealed in an interview.
“Brian mentioned there were some people who had been threatening him,” she said. However, she expressed uncertainty about the specifics, suggesting they might have stemmed from disputes over coverage policies.
A Grieving Family and Community
Paulette Thompson described her husband as a devoted family man and an inspiring leader. “Brian was an incredibly loving, generous, talented man who lived life to the fullest and touched so many lives. Most importantly, he was a wonderful father to our two sons and will be deeply missed,” she said.
Company Security Under Scrutiny
UnitedHealth Group employs a robust security team to protect its leadership, including at events like the one Thompson was attending. However, Thompson’s personal security detail was not present at the time of the attack.
The investigation is ongoing, and police are urging anyone with information to come forward. Meanwhile, the tragedy has left the healthcare industry and Thompson’s loved ones reeling, as they mourn the loss of a visionary leader.
